Music Videos are designed to promote the music of the artist without the artist being in that certain location. Music videos only started in the 60’s where all artists had to do was be recorded in front of a camera. It could be as simple as lip-syncing in front of the camera but the idea was that if an artist had to be in Sydney to promote their music, that they could send over the music video and remain the their comfy homes and not have to suffer jet lag. Also there was more of a convenience with a music video because not only would the artist be able to stay in their homes and often the sound was often better because there was no audience screams, which would often distort the sound that was produced (Sound over 0dB). It also gives a visual representation of the music, a specially as the music video industry started to boom in the early 80’s.
They promote both the music and artist because it reminds people of the song or is suppose to remind them and this can regularly lead them to going out and buying the single or LP/Album, which would bring in more money for the artist. In turn, if the artist video is played for a long period of time this could also extend the intake of money. This money would also help pay for initial cost of the video, then whatever is made after that would go to the artist as profit on their music.
Music videos, to start with, was on only played on TV until the popularity of the internet was created, that was when the start of video sites was born, once that had happened then that was the start people started to watch music on the internet but as soon as broadband came along more and more people started downloading music video onto their computers then later on it extended out to mobile phones and other handheld devices.
Another way to promote music videos is by including music in films which generally means that in the music video you will often find some clips off the film but that music just being in that certain film can often be brought because it reminds people of that particular part of that film i.e. one of my favourite films is Twilight and there is a scene where the vampires are playing basketball and the song behind that scene is Muse – Supermassive Black Hole and every time I hear that song it reminds me of that particular scene, therefore people will buy it because of that very reason.
We can see that music video promoting work because if you take a music video like Timbaland - Morning after Dark and read the quotes of the viewers you get quotes like "I love it! I have been looking for this song for ages." and "I love it...Can't stop hearing it" therefore if people like it, it encourages people to download/buy it.
Music Videos are an easy way for artist to make money but only if the audience members like the music and doesn't become bored with the video at one point or another. By creating a music video it helps the Artists music to be heard, this may make or break new Artists. As technology has moved on it becomes clear that more and more thought is being put into the music video, this means that the Artist and Producers are thinking whether they video should be a performance based video or should it be a story based video. A good example of a story based music video is 'Michael Jackson - Thriller' where the music video is being portrayed as a horror story. A good example of a performance based video is 'Muse - Resistance. Although there is a generally a pattern with the types of music and what music videos are made. The performance videos tend to be rock videos and the story based videos tend to be hip hop and pop. This pattern tends to be because of the audiences that they are appealing to. The target audience is what it comes down to really so if their target audience is teens you would make a video that they are in to at the moment, and by doing so it will encourage them to watch it, which in turn will make the artist profit.
