Anthony Mandler started his career as a photographer. He regularly shot photos for magazine front covers such as Entertainment Weekly, Esquire and ESPN before he started on working on music videos.
Anthony Mandler created he’s first popular music video in 2000 with “Pimp Hard” by “Eightball and MJG” and ever since then has been directing music videos. He has worked on many different music videos for different artist like “50 cent” to “Rihanna” to “OneRepublic.” And is now starting to work on he's first movie called Vlad.
When comparing two music video I decided that I would pick the same band and see the how different the styles are if there is any difference. I’ve chosen the songs “Stop and Stare,” which I analysed in task two, and “Say (All I Need)” There isn’t much difference between the two music video, there are, obviously, two different story line, nether the less both videos are the same because both videos have got story lines. Also, in both music videos, the band is playing in sync with the music, this is a constant theme in all of his music videos that he has directed. The only real differences there are is there is more of an obvious effect that has been used in “Say (All I Need)” which includes the video in black and white but this only happens when the lead singer is looking for something or someone, almost as if looking back in the past. But when he gets to that place you see the lead singer writing the word which are in the song.
Most of the target audiences that Anthony directs for I would say are young adults to adults, I say that because, in these videos to get the storyline, it is very complicated, and this wouldn't be a video for children or the elderly. I say it's not for children because when you think of children watching videos I automatically think of cartoons. I also say that it's not for elderly because I don't think that they wouldn't like the music.
Some of the work that Anthony has done has got mainly positive feedback like one of the comments for OneRepublic – Say (All I Need) is “love this video! and his little book of lyrics at end was nice!” another comment from Rihanna – Russian Roulette “Great Video” although there are a lot of comments on that video which say “The video is dark and gloomy” and other comments like that but that is because that is what the song is all about. But there are comments like “amazing amazing amazing! the video quality is great... what to say about the music? speechless! these guys are mint!!!” So the audience, people that see the videos, all think that he’s work is good because to get comments that it is amazing means that they must enjoy it. The impact that Russian Roulette has on viewers is one that makes you think as it has a story behind it, because Rihanna and the other guy (Extra) are playing Russian Roulette and the guy pulls the trigger and ends up losing and it makes Rihanna crazy because he lost the guy. Therefore in the video you see her in a padded room and its very dark to show the darkness that she is going through. The way that the video has been edited makes it seem like a jigsaw puzzle the way that everything has been jumbled up (edited) so if the viewer doesn't watch it all the way through then it's like they don't have all the jigsaw pieces to complete the story. It is almost like the saying a picture has a thousand words but translated into a video. As in Say (All I need) there is still a story behind it which again makes the audience think about it. The idea behind it is not as clear as Russian Roulette but there is a story behind it never the less. I figure it is something to do with someone that the lead loved and they took everything from them but I only came up with that idea because of the lyrics used in that song.
Not only does Anthony direct music video but he has done a bit of film/TV directing in a show called “Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood” and is currently working on a film called Vlad due to be released in 2012 and is also working on another film called Allegra, which is based on a novel called Shanteram by Gregory David Roberts.
